AI
Do you use AI to write my book?
Yes, as a tool, not as the author. I use AI-assisted tools to transcribe our sessions and to produce first drafts from your own words. Then I rewrite, restructure, and check every line against what you actually said. You review and approve every chapter. I tell every client this up front because you deserve to know how your book is made.
Will it sound like a robot wrote it?
No. The draft starts from your transcripts, so it carries your phrasing, your humor, and the way you talk. If anything sounds off, you'll catch it in review, and we fix it.
Which tools do you use?
Zoom for recording and transcription, and Claude and ChatGPT for drafting help. Your material is used only to work on your book, with settings that keep it from being used to train AI models.
Cost
How much does a book cost?
I charge $109 an hour, billed only for time actually worked. A typical book takes 80 to 180 hours, about $8,700 to $19,600 total. You start with a 10-hour Story Map for $1,090, then get a written estimate with a cap for the full book.
How do I pay?
Pay as we go, or buy prepaid monthly blocks of hours. I share a log of hours worked so you always know where you stand. Outside work, like coordinating with an editor, is approved by you in advance.
What if I want to stop partway?
You can stop at any time. You pay only for hours already worked, and you keep everything we've made: recordings, transcripts, outlines, and drafts.
Will my book make money?
Probably not, and I won't pretend otherwise. Most memoirs, especially self-published ones, don't earn back what they cost to make. People write these books to leave something behind, to carry a message, or to finally tell the whole truth. If sales are your main goal, let's talk about that honestly on the first call.
Credit and ownership
Who owns the book?
You do. You're the sole author and own the copyright, the manuscript, the recordings, and the transcripts. I don't take royalties or rights. I'm paid for my time, and that's all.
Will your name be on it?
Usually as “with Moriah Sandidge” on the cover or title page. That's my default, but it's negotiable. Some authors prefer a mention in the acknowledgments instead.
Is this ghostwriting?
No. A ghostwriter writes the book for you, often in their own words. I draft from your words, and you approve every page. And I'm not a publisher, so you keep full control over how and where your book comes out.
Privacy and anonymity
Is what I tell you confidential?
Yes. Recordings, transcripts, and drafts are stored in private, password-protected folders and shared only with you. I don't discuss your story with anyone, including family members who refer you, without your permission. Anything you say off the record stays off the record.
I'm in a twelve-step program. What about anonymity?
That's a real question, and only you can answer it. Publishing a memoir under your own name is a personal choice about your own anonymity. Some authors use a pen name, change identifying details, or leave out any fellowship names. We'll talk through your options before anything is published.
What about the people in my story?
We can change names and details to protect family, sponsors, and others. If your book includes sensitive material about real people, I'll recommend a lawyer review it before publishing.
Are you connected to NA, AA, or any fellowship?
No. Tell Me Your Book is an independent business, not affiliated with or endorsed by any fellowship or recovery organization.
The process
I'm not good with technology. Can I still do this?
Yes. That's exactly who this is for. I send the links, set up the files, and handle the recording. If Zoom is a struggle, we do sessions by phone. If you can answer a phone, you can write a book with me.
Do I have to write anything?
No. You talk and you review. Old journals, letters, or speaker recordings help, but they aren't required.
How long does it take?
It depends on your pace and how many revisions you want. Many books take six months to a year. I don't guarantee a finish date because your life comes first.
Where do you work?
Anywhere in the U.S. Everything happens by phone and Zoom.
What happens after the manuscript is done?
You'll have a manuscript ready for a professional editor and for publishing. If you'd like help, I can set up your publishing accounts, format the files, and coordinate the cover, at the same hourly rate.
